Reduce inflammation: The purpose of ice is to reduce inflammation. Cool temperatures inhibit local blood circulation which reduces swelling in the injured tissue. Inflammation causes redness, heat swelling and pain. Ice helps by reducing these. You should use ice for the first 48 hours, by then the inflammatory reaction will be reduced.
