How long should i use my ice machine after ankle surgery to repair my fracture?

At least 72 hours: Icing is always a good thing for reducing pain, swelling and expedite healing. No more than 20 minutes of icing at a time since after that the blood vessels open up and you could cool down the blood.

Reduce inflammation: The purpose of ice is to reduce inflammation. Cool temperatures inhibit local blood circulation which reduces swelling in the injured tissue. Inflammation causes redness, heat swelling and pain. Ice helps by reducing these. You should use ice for the first 48 hours, by then the inflammatory reaction will be reduced.
