Infection vs injury: Did it start suddenly during an activity? If so its likely an injury that could range from a minor muscle pull to a severe spine injury. A slower onset with a fever or feeling overall sick suggests infection, possibly an abscess. Rarely such an infection can swell the inside enough to block your breathing. You should visit your family physician or an ENT doctor. If short of breath go to er asap.

See below: Sharp neck pain usually comes from a degenerative joint or disc in the neck. Sometimes it's from a muscle strain or sprain. Early treatment options include a short course of nsaids (advil, aleve), gentle massage, moist heat, and focusing on posture. If pain lasts greater than 2 weeks see your physician.
