Perhaps: A corneal ulcer is a vert serious infection usually caused by a virus or bacteria and rarely by atypical micro-organisms. If it is not controlled with anti-microbials and/or there is too much inflammation, then the cornea will thin out & eventually perforate. That will require immediate treatment and likely surgery. Even if the infection is cured patients may still require surgery for scarring.
