No: Infected teeth hurt. The treatment (root canal) does not. See and endodontic specialist for care.
Dr. Jack Binder
Specializes in Dentistry
Generally not: Usually, front teeth are the easiest to treat. Unless the tooth is very infected, expect a relatively comfortable outcome.
Dr. James Beck

No: Root canals should not be painful at all. Root canals are almost as routine as doing a filling. You will get "numbed up" with a local anesthetic. If you experience any pain during the procedure, let the doctor know so he can give you more local anesthetic.
Dr. Bruce Terry

No: Modern root canal treatment is simple and pain free. Don't worry!
Dr. Alex Shvartsman

Not if done right: There is no reason dentistry has to be painful. If your dentist actually cares about not hurting you! if he/she hurts you fins another dentist.

Is it more or less painful to have a tooth exaction on a previous root canalled tooth?

The same as a normal: extraction. Sometimes a root canal treated tooth is harder to extract. Since the blood supply has been gone from the tooth, the tooth tends to get more brittle over time. There should be no pain either way because of the Lidocaine local anesthesia. Take care.

Not painful: Root canals can be painful if it is a hot tooth. This means that the tooth is badly infected and local novocaine will not work well.

Usually not at all: With few exceptions, root canal therapy (rct) should be free of pain. Local anesthetic should eliminate all discomfort (if you feel anything, you must alert dentist). Afterwards, there is often no pain (the procedure, many times, is meant to treat pain), but if any exists, pain medication should take care of it. Don't fear the treatment.

Usually comfortable: Root canals are usually comfortable. Your dentist will use a very strong anesthetic to prevent you from feeling most of the procedure. If the tooth has an infection it can be a little uncomfortable when your dentist initially gets into the pulp chamber where the nerve lives. The anesthetic today is much better than it was 20 years ago where most of the stories come from! Best of luck!

Like any other,: for the most part. Keep the gums healthy by brushing and flossing regularly. Teeth that have had root canal therapy are brittle and often need a crown, so discuss this treatment with your dentist.
