The basics: A root canal procedure is simply a cleaning out of the tooth where the nerve and blood vessel tissues are found. This is accomplished by using different sized small special instruments to file and shape the inside until it is clean. Solutions are used to disinfect the inside and then it is sealed closed to keep bacteria from infecting it. You usually will need a crown to protect it afterwards.
