Follow One Rule: Never put a child to bed at nap-time or night-time with a bottle containing anything other then plain water. If they are getting enough nutrition during the day while they are awake they don't need anything extra at nap-time and night-time. If decay has already started and it is mild you may be able to controll it with precription Fluoride products. If severe it requires restoration.

Floss daily!: Brushing, at its best, cleans a very small area of tooth structure (near the gum line) that isn't naturally self cleansed by eating foods or washed away by saliva. Flossing cleans the walls of teeth completely hidden from these natural cleansing mechanisms. If you are referring to early decay in a child, they tend to have decay in the grooves of premolars and molars which need filling.

Fluoride and calcium: Early tooth decay can be stopped or reversed by using a toothpaste with Fluoride and calcium to re mineralize the enamel of the tooth. You should see your dentist to make sure it is surface only and not something that needs treatment. Also very good oral hygiene, brushing and flossing is important.

Follow directions: 1st dental appointment should be at eruption of 1st baby tooth, but no later than 1st b'day. Wise to see a pedodontist, a pediatric dental specialist. Whether seeing a Pedodontist or a General Dentist, regular (2x/year) examinations are a must. Follow all instructions as to hygiene, diet, fluoride, etc. 46 seconds w a t'brush is inadequate. Play by the rules if you want success.
