Why do doctors shine a light in your eye and put their finger in front of it?

Checking pupils: This might be a way to check pupil reaction, although i personally don't do it like that. You can shine the light in the eye and observe the reaction of the pupil repeatedly by covering and then uncovering the light with your finger.
