A member asked:

There is a benign cyst on my thyroid. is it required that i remove it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably not: Thyroid cysts are common. If ultrasound shows no features worrisome for thyroid cancer, this can simply be followed by periodic ultrasounds. Your doctor may biopsy the cyst and remove fluid, but sometimes that is not even needed. If the fluid is drained, it will usually come back. If the thyroid and cyst are very large and bother you, it can be removed surgically, but usually not necessary.
