How have retainers improved since it was first created?

Absolutely: I now routinely use the viera retainer system by invisalign. Patients live them because they are invisible, comfortable and easily remade without impressions because they are stored as a computer file!

Various ways: Removable orthodontic retainers were once made of vulcanized rubber, then acrylics and plastics. The designs have continued to evolve as well. Fixed or "permanent" retainers have also changed from those fabricated on orthodontic bands to small wires bonded on the backs of teeth. What hasn't changed? The need for retention after orthodontic treatments.
