Depends on details: The exact details are important. "surgical emphysema" is often a way of describing subcutaneous emphysema. This is quite common with pneumothorax (collapsed lung). In general, pneumothorax is treated with tube drainage to facilitate re-expansion of the lung until the hole/air leak in the lung seals. Many factors can prolong the process. Surgery may be required to treat the "leak".

Good: Pneumothorax is treated with a chest tube and the leak from even an emphysematous lung will seal. Sometimes surgery and stapling is necessary to seal the bleb-blister on the lung. Stop smoking.
