Over use: Did you seek medical attention for this when it occurred? Without an x-ray or exam i cannot tell you anything with certainty. It is likely that you did not splint your finger, or for not long enough. If it was a fracture that was not displaced (bones separated), it would have beneficial to splint it and tape to neighboring finger, immobilizing this way allows it to heal. Probably over using.
