How do doctors treat a diaphragmatic hernia?

Depends: Depends on what you are asking. Surgery for a newborn or child with a defect? Adult with hiatal hernia? Some can be performed laparoscopic as in adult hiatal hernias. Larger birth defects may need biologic material to replace the defect. Newborns may have lung issues that need to be addressed after surgery.

Surgery: This requires operation through abdomen or chest depending on side of defect. Surgery generally takes place after pulmonary hypertension has resolved.

Surgical repair.: In utero, the optimal treatment of severe non-syndromic cdh cases is the placement of an endotracheal balloon to occlude the fetal trachea and help the lungs develop. Postnatally, the neonatologists and pediatric surgeons collaborate to support sick newborns around the surgical repair of the diaphragmatic defects with a mesh. Brain injury can occur at that time. Mild cases are asymptomatic.
