Grief after death : Brain biology differences cause depression and so does environmental stressors/ life factors (death, divorce, job change, legal problems, family disputes). A feeling is called a disorder when it impairs your functioning and affects you daily, your work and relationships. Help thru medicine or psychotherapy helps both kinds. Grief after death is normal, not an ongoing disorder.

Grief vs Depression: Great question. In some cases of grief, it's probably true that some physicians diagnose depression and prescribe antidepressants too quickly. It's also true that some cases of grief can morph into immobilizing depression, and that treatment (both talk therapy & medication) can help these people. Features characteristic of true depression include suicidality and extreme negativity about the self.
