No distractions: It may be from the fact that it is quiet at night and that there is nothing else for the brain to focus on. It could be that her blood pressure is higher lying down than sitting up. The carotid artery sits close to the eardrum, so the force of blood through it may cause a sense of a "heard heartbeat".
