Absolutely: Dental implants are foreign bodies that are surgically implanted into your bone. There is always the possibility of infection.

It depends when: The placement of a dental implant is a surgical procedure. Any surgical procedure has certain risks which includes the risk of infection, although when done by a skilled surgeon under proper protocol the risk is small. Once the implants have been uncovered and restored, the risk of infection is minimal and rarely occurs unless you do not maintain your teeth and gums properly and routinely.

Yes: You can get infection from placing dental implants from the bacteria introduced, usually during surgery. Notify the surgeon of why suspect it's infected so they can x-ray it and do a clinical examination and diagnose. Then they can formulate a treatment plan for you to treat the infection.

Dental implants: You do not get infection from dental implants but dental implants could become infected. The infection could be from poor oral hygine, poor implant integration , patient medical condition and smoking.

Yes and No: Dental implants, in and of themselves, do not cause infections. What causes any type of infection are bacteria. Since we all have bacteria in the mouth, it is extremely important to keep the surgical site of the implant as clean as possible. If certain types and amounts of bacteria are present in the gum tissue around the implant, an infection can result, and may even lead to loss of the implant.

Excess cement!: The most probable cause of infection around an implant is excess cement. While excess cement is a reversible irritation to natural teeth it is the # 1 cause of implant issues. It is why, whenever possible the crown that covers the implant should be screw held not cemented!

Not exactly, but....: An infection can occur with implant surgery, but the implants themselves do not cause infection. This is caused by bacteria. foreign body, necrotic tissue, etc. at the time of surgery or after the surgery before complete tissue healing. You may get something in the wound site, or otherwise contaminate it, as you could with any surgery. Implant surgery is predictably safe and successful.

Although rare: dental implant surgery carries a risk of infection like any other oral surgery procedure.
