What kind of floss should i use if i have braces?

Many: What is most important is that you use floss in the first place; many patients do not and suffer the consequences (gingivitis, cavities and bone loss). Some people use floss threaders which are stiff needle like devices that help the floss pass under the wires. Some floss come with a stiff tip for the same effect. Swollen gums cause teeth to move more slowly and impacts treatment time. Floss!

It doesn't matter: I have seen string, yarn, super floss, regular floss...Whatever. You are just trying to disrupt the colony of bacteria living between your teeth. The colony needs to be stirred up/disrupted/mixed up..Choose your term. Once disrupted, acid production decreases and the chance of a cavity is reduced. This must be done daily to be effective.

Braces + Floss: It is extremely important to clean between teeth, where a toothbrush cannot reach, to keep gum tissues healthy to facilitate tooth movement. Any type of floss works, as long as it is used EVERY day. As flossing is difficult with braces, a WaterPik is a marvelous alternative. Our patients who use a WaterPik reduce their time in Orthodontic treatment by more than 10%.
