What is the difference between circumcision and dorsal slit?

Retracting foreskin: A dorsal slit widens the opening of the foreskin to either allow retraction of the foreskin or if large enough, allow the forskin to drape downward almost as if circumcised but with the foreskin still present. A small dorsal slit can release a "tight" opening allowing ease of retraction. A circumcison means to "incise around" & all of the foreskin is removed. There are degrees of circumcision.

Circ. removes skin: Foreskin is totally removed in a circumcision. Dorsal slit involves a vertical incision through the tight part of foreskin on upper surcae of penis and is sutured transversely. This preserves foreskin and makes it easy to retract. Sometimes called a prepucioplasty. This for men or parents who wish retention of foreskin for familial, social or ethnic reasons.

Skin removal: The foreskin is removed with circumcision. No skin is removed with a dorsal slit, also known as a prepucioplasty, or foreskin preserving procedure. Traetment ment for phimosis or tight foreskin. A vertical midline incision is made on dorsum of penis thru the narrow area, until skin can retract easily. Vertical incision is then surured transversely, and thus foreskin is preserved.
