Communicate: The question is a puzzle. ?Why was it done or not done? Do you think you want it if it wasn't done? A circ is a simple procedure for newborns but a bit complicated after a month of age. It requires complicated anesthesia, pain management & followup.Do you want it because you are different than your friends?Want it for potential medical reasons?Sort out the issues & be straight with the folks.

Bring up what?: To discuss why you were or were not circumcised or because you wish to be circumcised. Screw up your courage and talk to them. You may feel more comfortable discussing it one on one rather than one on two.

A 38-year-old member asked:

Should I look for new caregivers if my parents are too old to take care of my baby?

2 doctor answers3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Scott Katz
Pediatrics 26 years experience
Yes: Although your parents will love and care for your child like no-one else, if you have concerns they are too old to properly supervise your child then you should make other arrangements. Otherwise, you will always be worried and unable to relax at work, and will always second guess yourself if something happens. This applies to any caregiver. If you have concerns, trust your instinct.
A member asked:

Should I have my baby boy circumcised?

5 doctor answers13 doctors weighed in
Dr. Rafael De Haro
Pediatrics 35 years experience
Yes: It is not necessary to circumcise a boy but it does improve hygeine. Uncircumcised boys and parents will have to deal with that foreskin for many years to come. Most other males in this country are circumcised and this can become an issue in locker rooms. Circumcised males have fewer uti's and foreskin infections and there are some concerns about std transmission from long foreskins.
Dr. George Klauber

American Academy of Pediatrics has recently reversed its' previous recommendation and now has come down slightly in favor of all any boys being circumcised. Certainly advisable in any country or area where there is a high incidence of HIV.

My mother had a painful labor and the doctors said it was a ''dry'' labor. Am I at risk of this?

No: Dry labor is when the water breaks and labor doesn't start until many many hours later. You can just imagine sliding on a water slide without the water! dry labor is not hereditary.
A 45-year-old member asked:

How must I discuss difficult news like needing a nursing home with my elderly parent?

2 doctor answers2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Kevin Passer
Child Psychiatry 35 years experience
It is difficult: If possible, i would try and get your siblings (if you have some) as well as other family members involved in the entire process. It is very difficult for parents as well as for the children involved when it comes to needing nursing home placement. Perhaps there is a therapist, like a social worker in your area who can give you some ongoing assistance. Most nursing homes employ such an individual.
