A 21-year-old male asked:

how long does it take for a c2 vertabrae fracture to heal, my son fractured the vertabrae in his neck back in may, now he is experiencing numbness. ?

Contact neuro: Of course the numbness could be due to a number of issues, but a neuropathy or other issue stemming from the fracture would be the most concerning. I would call the neurosurgeon immediately, first thing in the am, and discuss this with their nurse, to get proper testing and evaluation done. This is not one you can wait on.

If my child has a possible wrist or arm fracture, when must I take him to er?

??signs??: Kids capable of waking off an injury will, they are more interested in playing & seldom stop unless something really hurts. If no obvious deformity or discoloration of the skin, you might watch it for a while & place a cool compress to help the pain & reduce the swelling. Do this only if the kid can make a fist & extend it & roll the hand back & forth. If not, get it checked now.

A 46-year-old female asked:

My son had his wisdom teeth taken out yesterday. He is now running a 101.1 fever. Can I give his motrin while he is on oxycodone?

You can but caution: Oxycodone, often given in combo with Acetaminophen (tylenol (acetaminophen)) and generally known as Percocet for pain control in situation such as dental extraction here. The tylenol (acetaminophen) should help with fever, but may not be enough (often 325mg). So, you can add another plain tylenol (acetaminophen) 325mg or motrin, but must monitor closely as infection is a concern and follow-up with the dentist is recommended. Good luck.

Bump on side of mouth but don't hurt and looks like a blister and I got big bumps on back of my tongue and throat but none of it hurts?

Mucocele possibly: The bump on the side of your mouth might be a mucocele. It is a clear bump filled with salvia. Caused when the duct to a minor salivary gland gets clogged and the saliva backs up. Most common on the lower lip but can occur elsewhere in the mouth. Ussually resolve on their own. Some times large ones require surgical removal. Bumps on the back of your tongue are probably normal vallate taste buds.

Infection: You have a respiratory/throat infection. Could be viral and could be bacterial best to see a doctor. Other options to help with symptoms include taing elderberry, gargling with salt water or half and half peroxide and mouthwash (do not drink- just gargle) and a warm cloth around neck to hep with lymph glands. Important to rule out strep throat as that will improve with antibiotics.

Could myoclonic jerks be from cervical spine stenosis. Before I fall asleep sometimes I have this jerk and I bite my tongue. Happens like once a month?

Sleep disorder: Classically myoclonic jerks are a type of rare seizure disorder, these are rare in adults. And its true that a lot of seizures happen upon waking or going to sleep. You may have a sleep disorder that explains this better. It would be wise to have a sleep study to be sure and there are treatment for these as well.
