Threat as a trigger: I agree with dr. Adler & dr. Ali. Nightmares may become terrifying & the level of accompanying autonomic arousal may wake from sleep. The dream content may be symbolic or it may be very specific to the person's past traumas. Regarding what triggered the nightmares , threats may generate as much fear & horror as actual events. Terror & fear are in the eye of the beholder. It is possible.
