A member asked:

Can there be any scientific proof between pregnant women drinking alcohol and having alcoholic children?

Maybe: Antenatal alcohol exposure can lead to a developmentally delayed or disabled child. Alcohol can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, which can injure many organ systems & may affect the person for a lifetime. Antenatal alcohol exposure increases risk for adhd, & other neurologic conditions that predispose to alcoholism in later life. Doctors rightly advise against alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

Indirectly: Fetal alcohol exposure can certainly lead to fetal alcohol syndrome/exposure(fas/e). But antenatal alcohol exposure is implicated in increased risk for adhd, bipolar disorder, depression. All of these conditions are associated with increased incidence of alcoholism. Brain structures suspected to be problematic in causing alcoholism are structures easily injured by antenatal alcohol consumption.
