No: Dental x-rays are needed to not only detect cavities but also to screen for any cancerous lesions in the jaw bone. The benefit of dental x-rays far outweighs any disadvantage. Today, there is also a lot less radiation with the new digital radiography in the dental offices

Not usually: 4 digital bitewing xrays furnish a plethora of information, but since radiation exposure is cumulative, dentists don't expose patients needlessly.

Not likely: Typical dental x-rays are so low dose that the amount of radiation you will be exposed to is insignificant.

Not very much: If you are hoping to avoid x-rays, please know that your dentist cannot tell you what is happening to your teeth, gums, or bone below your gumline. Only the x-rays can give you a complete diagnosis, and the small problems can quickly become large ones.
