Choices: Patients always have the right to choose whether to follow medical recommendations or not. However, if the person's illness makes him/her dangerous to self or others, the psychiatrist can recommend and pursue involuntary hospitalization for safety and assessment in a secure place. Doctors work to develop trusting relationships w/patients so that this can serve their health over time.

Medication refusal: Agree with Dr. Pappas. It is ultimately the patient's choice. However, if the patient lacks capacity to make medical decisions on their own behalf or poses a danger to self or others that can change the situation.
