A member asked:

If my top lip was fuller (lip collagen), would it help with my gums showing too much when i smile?

Gummy smile: Using a lip filler on your upper lip, will not hide your gummy smile. The plumping of the upper lip will protrude rather than drop to cover the gums. There maybe other ways of showing less gums, like crown lengthening. The teeth will be longer and can be covered by facings to makeover the smile. Consulting with a cosmetic/plastic surgeon would also provide alternatives.

Not necessarily: You are concerned about your "high lip line"... Show ing too much gingival tissue. Your gums can be trimmed slightly if your teeth appear small, giving your teeth a more proportional appearance. Speak to a periodontist together with an oral surgeon and orthodontist, who will determine if you situation is skelital in nature, and what your options are for treatment. All the best..

Probably not: It would likely make it arrear more "gummy". You might see a prosthodontist to evaluate your smile contours, lip lenght and line. They might work with a periodontist (gum tissue specialist) to help you achieve your desired look. I would do this first.

Team approach: No. If you have a gummy smile the gums/bone/teeth need treatment. Your lip only needs treatment (lengthening, not plumping) if it is too short. You need evaluation by General Dentist or Prosthodontist, Oral Surgeon, Orthodontist, & Periodontist to determine cause of your gummy smile and appropriate treatment. Ask all practitioners to evaluate for "vertical maxillary excess."
