Consider elsewhere: 2 tonsil infections a year would not usually result in having to have tonsils removed. The cause needs to be identified. Is it really from strep and from from who? Is it from allergies or a compicated immune problem? How your nutrition? Your physician may decide to send you to an allergist or hematologist, as well as seek out an ENT consult. Surgery is the last resort. Invasive. Costly. Risky.

Possibly: If you are an adult and are having 2 true tonsil infections/year then it may be an option. Tonsillitis is usuall pretty painful and most people feel really bad during an episode. This could translate into up to 2 weeks of missed work/year... That may be too much for what you do. If you've had any complications related to tonsillitis - breathing issues or an abscess - i would consider tonsillectomy.

Possibly!: The american academy of otolaryngology- head and neck surgery issues guidelines on tonsillectomy; practically speaking, several (4-6) episodes of tonsillitis in a year, or 2-3 episodes per year for a couple of years in a row is enough to consider tonsillectomy. Realistically, these recommendations are "loose" guidelines; it depends on the severity of your tonsillitis episodes.

Tonsil: The current practice guidelines for tonsillectomy are for when the patient has 3 infections a year for 3 years in a row, 5 in 2 years, or 7 in one year. These are guidelines, not rules. Sometimes the patient has other mitigating factors lead to the decision for tonsillectomy even after one severe episode of tonsillitis. Talk to your ENT or primary md to see if it is right for your situation.

Premature: Two infections a year is not generally enough to justify tonsillectomy.
