Yes: Yes, in your age range, tonsillectomy is very painful. If you are experiencing this pain now, call your ENT doc, make sure HE/SHE thinks it's within normal limits, and ask for stronger pain meds.

About the same: However, one time pain having the tonsillectomy versus recurring pain with the chronic tonsillitis and poor quality of life; it is well worth having the surgery.
