A few: The most common side effects are nausea and vivid dreams. There is data that Chantix can cause irrational thoughts, possibly increasing the risk of suicide, but I have not seen this clinically. The medicine blocks nicotine receptors in the brain. Years of exposure to the chemicals in tobacco smoke, then blocking those chemical receptors, can cause many side effects, depending on the patient.

See below : Vivid dreams and some stomach upset. All the rest of the symptoms typically attributed to it probably come from not smoking.

Psychiatric SE's: As a psychiatrist I am very concerned about patients with mood disorders taking this medication. I have had patients become suicidal and homicidal while on this medication.

Nausea: The most common side effect noted in my practice is nausea. It is lesser if you take the medication with food. Sleep disturbances like vivid dreams are not uncommon. Don't be scared and try to stick to he treatment. It is worth the trouble. Some patients may have to take half the dose if tolerability remains an issue.

Serious Side Effects: Chantix has some serious side effects - change in behavior, agitation, depression, suicidal ideation. You need to know about these before you take the chantix, and report them immediately to your doctor. Chantix is moderately effective to help patients quit, but I have had as many patients with side effects as I have that have done well. Please be careful.
