Well: In depression, in most circumstances, brain activity moves to the "fight or flight " area of the brain called the amygdala. It takes away neuroplasticity (the brain cell activity that makes memory) away from the frontal cortex. Its in the brain cells poor ability to "wire and fire" that mem. All three can: have a negative impact on intermediate memory. Obviously the worse the depression is, the more the potential to impact memory. In bipolar disorder - being hypomanic, manic or depressed may adversely impact memory.
