Typically: I typically recommend crutches, a walker, or a knee walker for ambulation after bunion surgery. Most patients can discard these modalities once they are comfortable and feel stable without them.

May need crutches: Depending on the exact procedure, following bunion surgery you doctor may want you to walk with a surgical shoe, rigid waking boot, or sure crutches to keep pressure off of the surgical site. Discuss the post operative course with you surgeon prior to your surgery so that you can be prepared and know what to expect.

Depends: The use of crutches depends on the type of bunionectomy performed. Often most bunionectomy procedures are stable enough to walk on after surgery although be it limited walking. If your pain is elevated when walking then you should use crutches to alleviate those symptoms. Always consult your surgeon though before doing anything different than instructed.
