Red and painful?: Most worrisome is infection- if the swelling is new, red, painful, with discharge from the wound, call your surgeon. It can take 2 months for the varicocele to resolve because we don't remove the veins. The blood in the varicocele will eventually reroute to the large vessels in the thigh.

Normal: It is not unusual after this type of surgery to have some swelling. Be sure to follow the post operation instructions that you were given. Cold packs can be used to reduce swelling. Keep all followup appointments with your surgeon. Notify your physician right away if pain, redness and swelling occur at the site of the surgery.
