What does diffuse marrow edema mean for the hip?

Non-specific: This can be seen (on mri) in a variety of states. It can mean a recent traumatic injury, disruption in blood flow (seen in pregnancy), infection, or other processes. It is relatively non-specific, but if you give your radiologist a full history, they should be able to narrow the diagnosis.
