Improved study: The eeg looks at various areas of the brain & the electrical activity generated over a range of activities. Good studies include periods when you are asleep, as well as fully awake. So the ability to take a short nap during the study helps. Each event provides a standardized series of events your brain must process & abnormal activity or seizures may be limited to a single activity.

Increase sensitivity: There are some eeg abnormalities that become more prominent when the patient is sleep deprived. In some settings, we will actually keep people up all night in order to bring out eeg abnormalities! it is definitely uncomfortable, but it is the best way we know to quickly and accurately determine the diagnosis and best course of treatment.
