Most likely: Recently my son had an open MRI and both of us needed to have the ear plugs, the machine is so loud it was painful to get through the 30 minutes of machine time. Just bring the ear plugs with you it can't hurt and can possibly help.

Yes: Open mris are more silent than closed mris but still noisy and the ear plugs are just for protection of your eardrums.
