A member asked:

What causes ceroid macrophages in colonic biopsy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Aging, wear and tear: Ceroid is a "junk" material that builds up over time, created from the oxidation of some fatty lipids. Ceroid accumulates in macrophages (a type of cell that collects "junk" substances as the years go by) of the heart, artery plaques, liver, intestinal tract, and brain in elderly folks, and is thus called a "wear and tear" substance. It is believed to have a role in age-related organ dysfunction.
