Pain meds: Pain meds may help but you should go back to your dentist for further evaluation of the tooth that hurts.

See your dentist: Extreme pain is not normal and may be warning you of another problem. You should see your dentist / oral surgeon right away. In the meantime, Ibuprofen (400 mg) taken 3 times a day for 5 days may help, along with warm salt water rinses.
