A 40-year-old member asked:

Will I be in a lot of pain after my hand surgery?

Dr. Bauback Safa
Plastic Surgery 20 years experience
Depends: The amount of post-operative depends entirely on what procedure is being performed. Simple surgeries such has trigger finger release or carpal tunnel release are less painful than more involved surgeries. Also, pain perception varies from patient to patient.

Agree with Dr Safa. In addition pain control is a science that most anesthesiologists and Hand surgeons manage quite well. Majority of patients get nerve blocks placed at the end of the procedures and are given anti-inflammatory meds and pain meds before they wake up as it has been shown in studies that early, good pain control limits pain perception and need for medication.
