An IV injection: A MRI with contrast is done just after a small injection of mr contrast containing a compound with gadolinium in it. Before receiving the contrast you will be screened to rule out underlying kidney disease which can increase the risk of a rare but significant condition called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. There is typically no sensation from the injection.
