Eccentric exercises: These are quite interesting exercises that load the muscle while it is being lengthened vs. Being contracted or shortened, which is the typical method. The gluteus minimus abducts, so there is loading while lengthening.

Muscle lengthening: In a dumbbell curl, the concentric phase involves flexing the arm by shortening the muscle. The eccentric phase occurs while straightening and lowering lowering the arm in a slow, controlled movement. The gluteus minimus abducts the thigh (moves it away from the other leg). The hip abductor gym machine will provide concentric exercise when pushing the legs apart, and eccentric as legs go together.
