See below: Simple wound care with cleaning and vitamin E oil (squeezed from a capsule) on the wound 1-2 times a day for a few weeks can help. Also, Mederma can help reduce scarring but is much more expensive than vit e oil.

Try Aquaphor: The skin heals better in a moist environment so a simple thing to try is to use an occlusive ointment dressing like aquaphor or vaseline. This is something that an 8 year old may actually do. You can bandage it with a non-adherent dressing, but he may not go for that. It should improve either way.
