Addiction potential: Because the benzodiazepines such as xanax (alprazolam) and Klonopin have addiction potention. They also typically are best at treating intermittent symptoms, whereas the ssris seem better at preventing.

Abuse potential: Benzodiazepines such as xanax are easy drugs to abuse due to their "high" and withdrawals. Zoloft and paxil, (paroxetine) being ssris, don't generally give a "high". They are overall much safer, and seem more efficacious in the long run. However, benzos do have their roles; discuss with your doctor.
