Loved one's bone scan points to possible metastatic cancer, but all blood tests and mammogram are negative for cancer. any ideas on what it could mean?

More testing: The bone scan result could be a false positive or additional tests may be needed to find the primary cancer.

Cancer workup: It means a thorough search to prove or rule out a cancer diagnosis is warranted. More blood work, and x-rays could be needed. Follow up with the health care practitioners involved in the care of your loved one is highly recommended.

Positive bone scan: A bone scan is performed following the injection of isotope, usually technetium 99m mdp. This radiotracer is accumulated in the skeleton. There can be areas of increased, decreased and normal uptake of the radiopharmaceutical. Bone scan is very sensitive for detecting lesions but not specific. Fractures, infection, arthritis, and tumors can be detected. Correlation with other imaging is necessary.
