Couple possibilities: One possibility is a fracture of the jaw bone. It could occur a couple of different places and is only going to be evident on an x-ray. Another possibility is a dislocation in the tmj. You may need to see an oral surgeon for either of these problems.

Joint swelling: It sounds as though you have swelling or effusion in the jaw joint on that side. Usually anti inflammatories and ice work well to relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms persist or worsen, you should see a dentist with training in TMJ disorders.
