Young adults: Pilonidal cysts occurs most commonly in young adults, mainly between the ages of 15-24. It is very rare for anyone to develop pilonidal disease after the age of 40. Males are more likely to develop these cysts than females.

Any number of: people can develop a pilonidal cyst though the diagnosis is usually made at an earlier age...teens and 20's. It is possible that a 53 year old could be diagnosed with a pilonidal cyst for the first time though uncommon. They can occur in males, females and any race, but there is no particular "type" of person.
