Mucinex (guaifenesin): Mucinex (guaifenesin) mini-melts would be a good choice for a child that age.

Depends on what: Is causing the cough.Postnasal drainage can cause bad coughing, gagging and choking to the point of vomiting. This time of year flu , viral illnesses, wheezing etc can cause coughing. Best to have him seen by his pediatrician. In the meantime, give supportive treatment.

Relieve symptoms: The over the counter cough preparations for toddlers are not very effective and there are potential side effects. Monitoring his temperature, treating fever and reporting the fever to your pediatrician, keeping him well hydrated and nasal saline drops/humidifiers may help. Most viral infections last no longer than 10 days.
