A member asked:

Can you still get uterine fibroids if you get a hysterectomy, even if they occur outside the uterus?

NO: Fibroids are a growth of the muscular wall of the uterus. Once the uterus is gone they can no longer form. The exception is if the cervix was left in place, and then occasionally a fibroid can growth from the cervix. The ovary can occasionally grow a solid growth called a fibroma, but this is not the same as a uterine fibroid.

Fibroids: Smooth muscle tumors can occur in any tissue with smooth muscle, not just the uterus. Also, women who have had a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy for fibroids are at risk for the fibroids recurring because of pieces implanting in other parts of the abdomen.
