GBS: Group b strep (gbs) is one of many bacteria that live on most people's body. When it lives on or around the vaginal area, a newborn baby has a higher risk of getting in or on the body. Unfortunately, gbs can be deadly to a newborn. Please talk to your doctor about what you can do to reduce this risk.

Bacterial carrier: Group b strep is a type of bacterial found in the vaginal canal of about 30% of women. It is not a harmful bacteria to the carrier. However, it can be passed to the newborn thru the birth canal causing the newborn to become very ill. Group b strep can cause pneumonia, bacteremia or meningitis in the newborn. If a mom is a carrier, she is usually treated at least 4 hrs prior to delivery to avoid.
