Pneumonia or cough?: Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that looks a particular way(s) on chest x-ray and sounds a certain way on exam. If you have a cough that produces sputum and not pneumonia, you may have bronchitis. 99% of bronchitis is viral, in which case antibiotics are harmful. I am assuming you've had a fever; if he/she didn't test for flu, examine you, or (after the exam) get an x-ray, get seen now.
