How does an ophthalmoscope work?

Light: An ophthalmoscope sends a beam of light, properly focused, to the back of the eye illuminating those structures which can be viewed by your ophthalmolgist with a clever mirror arrangement. It depends upon the same light principal that causes 'red eye' in your pictures.
