Fractures: Can be minor but there are some that need surgery especially if the joint is not lined up, sprains are ligament injuries and the finger hours are prone to these too in a basketball scenario often these are partial but i'f it is a complete ligament tear trwatment is more complex an evaluation and an x-ray can help to differentiate these injuries if you need care a gand surgeon is a good place.

Needs xray: There are many cases where people believe that they have "sprained" a finger only to find out that it was actually a break. Some of these breaks could even need surgery. It is more likely a sprain, but you can't know for sure unless you get an xray. I would recommend that he be evaluated by a health care professional.
