Protective coating: Posterior permanent teeth have deep grooves and crevices on the chewing surface. This is the most common area to get a cavity on these teeth. Dental sealants are a composite material that is flowed into these areas to make them "shallow valleys" so food and bacteria can't get stuck in these grooves, thus making it harder to get a cavity. Sealants are cost effective and easy for the patient.
